Report On 3 Day Robotics and Coding program

The Robotics and Coding program was a three-day event held from the 3-5 April 2023 at the Elmina Research and Innovation Centre (ERIC). The program was designed to introduce 40 students from various schools in Elmina to the basics of Robotics and Coding. The program also aimed to encourage teamwork and socialisation among the students.

The program had facilitators from IoT Hub Network, Ghana STEM Network and E-Sports Association of Ghana. It was sponsored by Lemon Beach Resort and Nana Kweku Amissah I, Nguaduhen of Edina Traditional Area, with support from Michael Kunke Foundation, Digital Foundation Africa and Lisa Singleton.

DAY 1

The program began on the first day with a brief introduction to Robotics and Coding. The facilitators took the students through the basics of coding, the various languages in coding, the components and software needed for coding, and the job opportunities as a coding engineer. The students were divided into mixed groups to promote teamwork and socialisation. The students had hands-on sessions, where they were able to learn how to code a simple robot using various programming languages.

DAY 2

On the second day, the students were introduced to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its functions. They were taught how AI can help in research and learning. The students were also given hands-on experience in building and programming a simple AI system.Students sitting behind computers

The second part of the day was dedicated to Electronic Sports (E-Sports), where the students were introduced to various game consoles and the job opportunities in gaming. The students were taught the benefits and uses of electronic games, and they had the opportunity to play different games.

DAY 3

The last day of the program focused on 3D printing. The students were taken through the basics of 3D printing and the possibilities in 3D printing. They were taught how to design and print 3D models using various software.  The program ended with a closing ceremony, where the students were congratulated for their participation and encouraged to continue researching into the various areas discussed.

CONCLUSION

The Robotics and Coding program was a great success, and the students showed enthusiasm throughout the program. The program aimed to introduce and help integrate STEM education into the mainstream curriculum of schools in Elmina and later into other areas of KEEA. The 3 Day event was organised by the Elmina Research and Innovation Centre (ERIC) in partnership with Michael Kunke Foundation and Digital Foundation Africa and was sponsored by Lemon Beach Resort and Nana Kweku Amissah I, Nguaduhen Edina Traditional Area and with support from Lisa Singleton. The program has paved the way for the formation of Coding and E-Sports clubs within Elmina, which will help the students to participate in national competitions.
