Women In Sexual Education (WISE)

Women In Sexual Education (WISE) Project, is a community-driven initiative aimed at empowering women and girls in Elmina, a vibrant coastal town in the Central Region of Ghana. We are dedicated to fostering a supportive environment where they can access comprehensive health education, resources, and support to make informed decisions about their well-being.

Vision Statement:

Empowering women through knowledge, dignity, and equality, the Women In Sexual Education (WISE) Project envisions a world where every woman possesses the confidence and education to make informed decisions about her health, relationships, and overall well-being. We aspire to create a community where women stand strong, support one another, and actively contribute to shaping a healthier, more equitable society.

Mission:

The mission of the WISE Project is to provide comprehensive and culturally sensitive sexual education, health awareness, and empowerment programs for women. Through a collaborative approach, we aim to foster a safe and inclusive environment where women can openly discuss and learn about their physical and mental health, build essential life skills, and cultivate a sense of empowerment. By bridging gaps in education and promoting dialogue, we strive to equip women with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate life’s challenges with resilience and self-assurance.

Addressing Challenges:

Access to Menstrual Hygiene Products: Many young girls in Elmina struggle to procure menstrual hygiene products, leading some to engage in risky behaviors such as transactional sex. At WISE, we aim to alleviate this burden by distributing menstrual hygiene products to those in need.

Lack of Sexual Education: Parents often shy away from discussing topics related to sexual health with their daughters, leaving them to rely on friends for information. This can result in misinformation and potentially harmful practices. To address this gap, we engage professional health personnel to provide accurate information and serve as confidants to the girls.

Our Approach:

  • Professional Health Personnel Engagement: Our team consists of trained professionals who engage with young girls in a safe and confidential environment. Through open dialogue, girls can freely discuss their problems and receive accurate information about sexual health.
  • Cultural Sensitivity and Communication: We communicate in both English and the local language, Fante, to ensure a full understanding of issues and allow the girls to fully express themselves. This approach fosters trust and enables effective communication between our team and the girls we serve.
  • Menstrual Hygiene Education: In addition to addressing sexual health topics, we provide comprehensive education on menstrual hygiene practices. This includes discussions on proper hygiene routines, menstrual cycle education, and the importance of using safe and hygienic menstrual products.
