The Akotobinsin Methodist Primary School in Elmina recently experienced a transformation that brought immense relief to students and staff alike. For years, the Class 5 classroom endured persistent leaks during rainy weather due to ripped and perforated aluminum roofing sheets. This caused pools of water to collect where students were meant to sit, regularly disrupting lesson sessions and hindering effective learning.
The Michael Kunke Foundation, with funding from Raynet, a Czech-based IT firm, stepped in to resolve the issue. Work commenced early on a Saturday morning, with the removal and proper disposal of the old aluminum roofing sheets. By the end of the day, the classroom had a new look, with durable roofing slates replacing the damaged sheets.
As part of its commitment to community development, the foundation employed local artisans from within Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) for the project, ensuring that the initiative not only improved education infrastructure but also created financial benefits for the local economy.
When students and teachers returned on Monday morning, their joy, shock, and excitement were palpable. Madam Emma Priscilla Wilson, headteacher of the school, expressed gratitude on behalf of the School Management Committee (SMC), the Parents Association, staff, and pupils. “This intervention means so much to us,” she remarked, “and we are incredibly grateful for the support.”
Michael Kunke, founder of the Michael Kunke Foundation, shared his satisfaction with the project. “Seeing the impact of this facelift on the children and teachers is rewarding,” he stated. He emphasized the importance of such investments in improving the teaching and learning experience. Kunke encouraged the Parents Association to ensure students remain focused on their studies so the benefits of these interventions are fully realized.
He further pledged the foundation’s commitment to addressing structural challenges in schools across Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA), calling on local stakeholders to partner in this cause. “This project aligns with our Education Empowerment for Sustainable Communities (EESC) campaign, which aims to enhance access, quality, and sustainability in education,” Kunke noted.
Finally, he expressed deep appreciation to Raynet for their generous support and urged others, especially local entities, to join in fostering sustainable development within the educational sector.
This successful project is a testament to the power of collaboration in improving the conditions that support education. The future looks brighter for the students of Akotobinsin Methodist Primary School.
