Women In Sexual Education (WISE) is an initiative of the Michael Kunke Foundation, aimed at providing comprehensive and culturally sensitive sexual education, health awareness, and empowerment activities for women. The second power session was supported by Marlene Fuller. The project’s primary objective is to empower women through education, enabling them to make informed decisions about their health, relationships, and overall well-being.
Participants and Activities: On Friday, May 10th, 2024, the second WISE Power Session took place at Kwesiedum M.A. Primary School, situated on the outskirts of KEEA near the Western Region. The school, part of the Agona Circuit, boasts a total student population of 148. Led by Theodora Asamoah, the Women’s Health Education & Empowerment Coordinator of Michael Kunke Foundation, the session engaged 28 female students from Junior High 1 – 3, with 11 girls actively experiencing their monthly menstrual cycle and 17 yet to experience it. During the two-hour interactive discussion, topics such as Personal Hygiene, Menstrual Cycle, and Sexual Education were covered.
Outcomes: The session facilitated a free, open discussion where students felt comfortable asking sensitive questions and receiving answers they were satisfied with. Students shared insights into their daily lives, discussing how they engage in extra work such as farming, selling in the market, and carrying loads after school hours to afford menstrual hygiene products and other personal needs. At the conclusion of the session, each girl received a pair of sanitary pads, with girls actively menstruating receiving four packs. Additionally, some needy students who walked barefooted to school daily were provided with new pairs of shoes, eliciting great excitement and gratitude from them.
Future Plans: The Michael Kunke Foundation plans to return to the school for further engagement with the students. Furthermore, the foundation aims to support brilliant but needy students identified during the session, exploring avenues to assist them in excelling academically through partnerships with relevant stakeholders.
Recommendation or Call to Action: The foundation calls for continued support for the project through donations. Additionally, individuals can volunteer their time by filling out the “volunteer” form on the VOLUNTEER page, contributing to the project’s success and impact.
