Restoring Hope

Rebuilding Futures: Restoring Hope at Eguafo M/A Basic School

In the late afternoon of April 8th, 2022, a devastating storm struck Eguafo, in the KEEA constituency  leaving the community in shock. Within the span of just two and a half hours, the Junior High School (JHS) block at Eguafo M/A Basic School had its roof torn off by fierce winds and thunder, exposing classrooms and endangering the lives of students and staff alike. Since that day, over two years have passed without any external assistance, leaving the school and its students vulnerable.

In a heartfelt plea, the Head Teacher of the school, Ebenezer Horace Eshun, expressed the urgency of the situation. He described how the school—founded in 1948 for primary education and later expanded to include a JHS in 1957—has long been a critical resource for the three neighboring communities of Ponkrom, Eguafo, and Breman. With 431 students currently enrolled, including 318 in the primary level and 113 in the JHS, the school remains a beacon of education and opportunity. Yet, without a safe roof over their heads, these students have faced ongoing disruption in their education.

I humbly write to plead for support… to safeguard the lives of pupils and staff,” Mr. Eshun wrote, highlighting the pressing need for emergency repairs. Despite the school’s vital role in these communities, it has received no aid until now. Mr. Eshun’s appeal serves as a reminder of the critical state of the school and the importance of rebuilding it to ensure the safety and future of the students.

Thanks to the generous intervention of our new Irish partner, RazorSpire, help is finally on the way. Under our Education Empowerment for Sustainable Communities (EESC) initiative, which focuses on fostering access to quality education and building resilient, thriving communities. we are committed to restoring this vital institution, beginning with the re-roofing of the JHS block. But this project is more than just about physical repair—it is about reigniting hope and creating a sustainable future for the children and families who depend on this school.

The local community has stepped forward as well, offering their support by providing accommodation for the artisans working on the project. This collaborative effort exemplifies the spirit of unity and determination that defines this community. Together, we are not only rebuilding a school, but also empowering a generation to Dare to Dream and Make a Difference.

At the Michael Kunke Foundation, we believe that education is the cornerstone of sustainable communities. Through our partnership with RazorSpire, we are making a long-term investment in the futures of these students, ensuring they can learn and thrive in a safe and supportive environment.
