Elmina Research & Innovation Centre (ERIC) Advances STEM Education with Cutting-Edge 3D Printers
May 16, 2024
The Elmina Research & Innovation Centre (ERIC), established two years ago as part of the Michael Kunke Foundation’s Digital Literacy Program, continues to make strides in enhancing STEM education and fostering economic growth within the community. This initiative, funded by the Czech Development Cooperation with additional support from Lemon Beach Resort, aims to create a hub for research and STEM.
In a significant development, Prusa Research, a globally renowned 3D printing company based in the Czech Republic, has generously donated three state-of-the-art Prusa iK MK3s+ 3D printers to ERIC. This donation is a testament to the ongoing commitment to providing cutting-edge technological resources to the community.
The Presentation Ceremony
The official handover of the 3D printers was conducted by David Ekow Duron, an investor in Lemon Beach Resort, on behalf of Prusa Research. The event was graced by the presence of Michael Kunke, the founder of the Michael Kunke Foundation and the Elmina Research & Innovation Centre. Their combined efforts have been instrumental in bringing advanced technological tools to the forefront of education in Elmina.
Distribution of the 3D Printers
Out of the three Prusa iK MK3s+ 3D printers donated:
- One has been installed at the Elmina Methodist Primary School.
- Another is actively being used at the Elmina Research & Innovation Centre.
- The third printer is held in reserve as a backup to ensure continuous operation.
Impact on the Community
The introduction of these 3D printers has generated considerable excitement among teachers and students. The availability of advanced 3D printing technology is expected to significantly enhance the quality of STEM education, allowing students to engage in hands-on learning experiences that were previously unattainable. This initiative aligns with ERIC’s mission to empower the community through innovative education and research opportunities, ultimately contributing to the region’s socio-economic development.
Testimonials
Michael Kunke expressed his gratitude towards Prusa Research and the Czech Development Cooperation, stating, “This contribution is a game-changer for our community. It provides our students with the tools they need to develop practical skills in STEM, which are crucial for their future success.”
Teachers and students shared their enthusiasm, with one teacher noting, “The 3D printer is not just a tool; it’s a doorway to endless possibilities. Our students are now more excited than ever to learn and explore new concepts in science and technology.”
Future Prospects
ERIC is committed to continually upgrading its facilities and expanding its programs to reach more students and educators. With the support of partners like Prusa Research and Lemon Beach Resort, the centre aims to become a leading hub for STEM education and research in the region.
