FARM WITH THE WINGS

The Michael Kunke Foundation in cooperation with the Embassy of The Czech Republic in Accra and Lemon Beach Resort in Elmina is going to construct a community poultry farm at the Egyeikrom Refugee Camp in the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem Constituency.

FARM WITH THE WINGS is the name of charity project that is going to set up long term and sustainable source of funds and work for the community of 1,412 refugees living in the camp. The farm will comprise of a 6-chicken chambers and a butchery. All construction work will be done by the refugees with the necessary and needed skilled labour.

The ambition of this project is:

  1. To establish the farm/ small business unit / that can be independent on external financial sources and also generate profit for the refugee community.
  2. To establish small high hygienic butchery with the capacity of 250 animals a month
  3. To establish and sign the contracts with the hotels and resorts from Elmina and Cape Coast as the main and regular customers.

After signing the contract founder of the foundation Mr. Michael Kunke stated that this project is a dream come true for a number of the refugees as it will serve as a source of employment and revenue generation for the over 300 families living in the camp. He also mentioned that a subscriber contract has already been signed with Lemon Beach Resort and other hotels are under the discussions.

 

The camp was established by Ghanaian government in 2011 as the donation of the 53 acres land to Ivory Coast refugees leaving their country after the outbreak of civil unrest in Ivory Coast. The Egyeikrom refugee camp hosts mainly Ivorian asylum-seekers and refugees who fled violence in Côte d’lvoire after the 2010 presidential elections. The current population of the camp is 1,459 persons of concern (PoC). The Government of Ghana provides assistance in the provision of camp management through NADMO and the general oversight of operations through the Ghana Refugee Board.
