One non-governmental organisation that is helping to give quality education to children in parts of the Central Region is The Kunke Foundation.
Formed in 2006, the foundation, which has focused its activities in Mensakrom, a community in the Agona East District, has made quite an impact on Agona Amanful ADA Pre-School.
Last year December, the foundation made a donation of some Teaching and Learning Materials (TLMs) to the authorities of Amanful School..
The object of that donation, according to the founder and President of The Kunke Foundation, Mr Michael Kunke, was to facilitate teaching and learning in the school. A follow-up trip just last week by the foundation, whose workers were accompanied by journalists from Accra, revealed that the TLMs presented to the school by the foundation were helping the school in many diverse ways.
It was observed that through the TLMs many of the school children could easily form objects such as chairs and tables whilst others had no problems forming two-letter words According to two Kindergarten teachers who spoke to Today in an interview, the situation, hitherto, was different, but admitted that there has been remarkable improvement after The Kunke Foundation donated the learning items to the school.
Mrs Mary Afful, KG 2 teacher, had this to say …“formerly what we were using to teach the kids were letter cards which was time consuming. These letter cards did not help the pupils that much because we always had to go in search of cello tapes or starch to stick two letters together on the blackboard to allow the pupils read and learn.”
Madam Felicia Essuman, another KG teacher, expressed that the school was elated the day the foundation presented to them the learning aids, stressing that the items have impacted positively on the children. “…With the teaching materials many of our school pupils are able to read the alphabets and the numerals,” said Madam Essuman.
Similarly, interactions with some pre-school level pupils, especially at kindergarten showed that many of them can now read and form objects.
Theophilus Benyin, a KG2 pupil, had this story to tell: “I am able to read the numerals and form objects all on my own. This has been made possible because of the teaching and learning items we received from The Kunke Foundation”.
Speaking to Today in an interview, the founder of The Kunke Foundation, Michael Kunke, said he was happy that their widow’s mite to the school was beginning to ‘bear good fruits’.
He went on to assure that his outfit will continue to help pupils and students of the school, noting further that plans were underway to extend their package to other schools in the region. “I am highly excited that the donation we made to Agona Amanful ADA School last year is yielding positive dividends. This is just the beginning and I can assure you that we have plans to extend such facilities to other schools in the region,” he assured.
Furthermore, Mr Kunke disclosed that plans are also afoot by his NGO to build a community library in Mensakrom. The community library, he intimated, when implemented will provide library for the children and youth in the community. According to him, the library will be shared by the town’s three basic schools and four surrounding villages. To this end, Mr Kunke appealed to corporate organisations, business men and women, governmental agencies to support his organisation’s community library project in Mensakrom.
